HP has another data warehouse based on 3000s

Chiming in after a 3000-only data warehouse solution emerged last fall, CSY showed high-level details at IPROF for a data warehousing bundle that’s all-3000, all IMAGE/SQL, including a separate 3000 for the warehouse. The solution uses Bridgeware – a combination of software from Quest and Taurus Software – to transform IMAGE data for use on the warehousing system, including data scrubbing, denormalization and loading into a star schema. It does this cross-platform updating and reporting in real time. DISC’s Omnidex optimizes queries in the system, installing multi-dimensional indexes on top of that existing star schema, to give end-users the performance they need. And the data gets manipulated at the client level with Brio Enterprise query tools, including pre-defined data models and Adaptive Reports for a short learning curve in the user community.

It means your users can explore IMAGE/SQL data from their desktops, something that can make the HP 3000 more strategic in companies which are already invested in the platform. The price isn’t small for all this, but it never is for data warehouses – and compared to other platforms with big database licenses, it might appear to be a discount. CSY’s Jennie Hou said that ballpark prices were $150K for a 939-powered system, $300K for a 969/220 and $500K for a dedicated 979/400. We say batter up. It might be more of a hit with your staff than getting yourself deeper into Unix or NT. HP admitted that “many sites are hesitant to embark upon [that path] because of the additional cost and learning curve.” We heard that too. Not a lot of sites have extra staff time for learning, but some could use warehouses.
