There will be support for CORBA
on HP 3000s by this fall

When HP brings the Netscape FastTrack Web server to MPE/iX this fall, another long-awaited technology will arrive in the trunk: CORBA object compatibility. OnOn Hong of CSY explained that the 1.2.2 version of DCE components will be included in the software, using a run-time version of the Visigenics software to distribute objects between HP 3000s and other servers over a Web connection, either intranets or the Internet. Like DNS support, CORBA capability is a feature CSY is acknowledging as fundamental to making 3000s Internet-ready.

FastTrack will use the Web Application Interface (WAI) to define interfaces in the Internet Distribution Language (IDL), and CSY said it has staffed the DCE project and is moving toward 1.2.2, the latest standard. Full DCE capabilities on the HP 3000 still demand you buy extra software, but the Web server will have enough CORBA bundled inside to use it as your path into the CORBA world. FastTrack won’t make the full 6.0 release of MPE/iX this summer, but will be available before 1999. You’ll be able to download it first from the CSY Jazz Web server early this fall.
