ROC reclaims BackPack name for its RoadRunner

ROC Software (512.336.4200) is changing the name of its RoadRunner for MPE backup software to BackPack/iX, embracing the name the product held for nine years while it was part of the Tymlabs stable of products.

BackPack/iX is a system backup management and recovery utility first released in 1984 under the name BackPack. The first release of BackPack was a high-speed replacement for MPE’s STORE and STORE. With the addition of new features and functionality in 1993, BackPack’s name was changed to RoadRunner for MPE.
“Call it our commitment both to the product and the legacy,” said Danny Compton, ROC’s director of development, of retaking the product’s original name. “There’s certainly a desire on our part to reconnect the long and sterling history of the product, which began as a replacement for STORE and STORE, with the full-featured enterprise backup management product it is today.”

As part of the celebration of the name change and the theme “Come back to BackPack,” ROC Software was giving away backpacks specially designed for carrying computer laptops at the HP World 2000 show in Philadelphia through daily drawings. Also, the first 50 visitors to the booth received plush bears sporting a miniature backpack.
