Express 1 is out in the user base

The most up to date version of MPE/iX is doing work in the installed base by now, and it’s a release that has some interesting nuances. Express 1 can be staged using PatchManager, but MPE/iX product marketing manager Mike Schneck reminds us that “there are, as always, certain 'non-stageable' patches. Generally, 'non-stageable' patches are usually those patches which contain hierarchical file and/or special installation files. Of the 66 patches contained in Express 1, I believe there are 12 patches that are non-stageable." Express 1 contains a patch for CSTM, the new diagnostics program that surfaced with the 7.0 release. Disc space usage had a minimal increase as a result of Express 1, but most of the increase in size occurred between releases 6.5 and 7.0 from a maximum of 1Gb in 6.5 to a maximum 1.1 Gb in 7.0.

Express 1 can consist of more than one tape in some circumstances.”It depends on what the customer ordered,” Schneck said, “but this question is often asked in respect to a customer that: a) is already on 7.0 and b) is not ordering any new subsystem products. In this case, the customer would get only one (the PowerPatch) tape, because the only change to the subsystem tape is the addition of the product Cluster/iX.” Patch management doesn’t necessarily require a live link between the e3000 and the Internet, using a program from Beechglen Development. “We provide a patch analysis gateway that does not require the HP3000 to have any type of Internet connection,” said co-founder Mike Hornsby. The free script also identifies any installed HP software products. It can be downloaded from beechglen.com/esppatch.htm.
