HP recognized the special success of the 3000

It may not have earned any mention in the most recent Hewlett-Packard Annual Report, but the HP 3000 (CSY) division, and general manager Harry Sterling in particular, earned some internal HP kudos during the last week of January. CSY was HP’s only product division to win the President’s Quality Award, given each year to the HP operations which have shown themselves to be an example of how things should be run in the $43 billion company. Sterling was characteristically too modest to beat his own drum much about the win, saying only that it rewards “sustained financial success, our high customer satisfaction and our high employee morale.” Marketing manager Roy Breslawski noted the award means more than just division pride for the people who work with and for CSY. HP company focus tends to fall on the groups named as winners, which helps CSY attract the top talent within Hewlett-Packard. That could be the equivalent of a cash prize, since finding and keeping talent is the biggest challenge that technology organizations like CSY face for the next few years. One challenge CSY seems to have licked is quotas; one rumor said CSY sold five times its quota for the first quarter of fiscal 1998.
