ROC gets its 3000 backup into the enterprise

ROC Software (512.249.9294) announced the availability of an MPE/iX client module for Tivoli Storage Manager&Mac250; (TSM), a product that was formerly known as IBM’s ADSM ADSTAR Distributed Storage. The client module works with ROC’s RoadRunner for MPE backup utility version 5.3. In June ROC acquired the remainder of the Unison/Tymlabs MPE portfolio from Tivoli, including Maestro for MPE, RoadRunner for MPE, SpoolMate, DCM Pak and Tapes Plus. The new RoadRunner module lets users of TSM and RoadRunner back up multiple HP 3000s over a network to centralized TSM servers, where backup, storage, and archival information can be managed by user-defined policies. Administrators can define these policies to automatically migrate, retain, expire, or duplicate backup and archival information.

ROC’s new MPE client also opens up the world of TSM — ROC says the Tivoli software is installed on a half-million networks around the world, with support for NT, Unixes, IBMs, Sun and AS/400s — with features such as point in time restore, incremental forever backup, and vital records retention. The software appears to give HP 3000 system administrators a way to leverage the TSM advantages without compromising the speed, functionality, and MPE-specific features of backing up under MPE. RoadRunner utilizes data compression, high-speed Store/Restore, the ability to backup during production hours without logging off users, enhanced volume set, and native IMAGE/SQL support (including jumbo datasets). By adding TSM, ROC also gets to expand 3000 backup support to a wider variety of storage devices and media — including advanced catalog and device management capabilities that can completely automate backup and recovery operations when used with Automated Tape Library (ATL) robotic devices.
