You can’t transfer software licenses between HP 3000s

There’s a lot that’s still unsettled about the broker crackdown that HP began with its lawsuits against three companies, but Harry Sterling has clarified one thing. A customer or broker cannot transfer a software license from system to system. “It’s like license plates in California,” the 3000 general manager said. “They go with the car during the sale.”

With thousands of used 3000s working around the world, those customers will be watching license transfer policies — and potential fallout for owners of Abtech and Hardwarehouse systems. In its lawsuit, HP did ask for Abtech to recall any systems it had illegally configured. The HP 3000 has never had a recall under any circumstances, so we’re eager to see how that might work. Sterling admitted HP isn’t sure how that would operate, either, in part because of the scope of the systems sold is uncertain. Customers can call HP at 408-447- 4185 about Software License Transfer questions, and CSY is taking the transfer process internal to the division now, and adding staff.
