Java will get HotSpot in the 7.0 Express

Guru of all things Java for the 3000 Mike Yawn reported the computer will get its first version of the vaunted HotSpot compiler with the 7.0 Express 1 release of MPE/iX, expected to ship in sometime this summer. Yawn included the release report as part of a packed talk at the third day of the Interex HP 3000 Solutions Symposium. The release of the first HotSpot for the 3000 provides another compelling reason for some Series 9x7 owners to consider trading their systems in for A-Class and N-Class computers. The 7.0 Express 1 release won’t be supported on the 9x7 systems, leaving them running the slower Just In Time Java compiler offered on MPE/iX 6.5.

The biggest thing to happen for Java users in the 3000 community “is the HotSpot virtual machine,” Yawn said in a one-hour briefing. The new compiler has tested from two times to five times faster than the current Java, he said. Work has been completed on the new version, making it a certainty for the Express 1 release.
