HP wants help on the Shared Source project for MPE Java class libraries

CSY’s Java expert Mike Yawn made several pitches during the recent California e3000 conferences for volunteers to help develop a key element in the Java/iX offerings for e3000s: Class libraries for MPE. If you’ve got the CVS shareware source code manager installed on your HP 3000, you can browse to http://osiris.interex ..org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/ to check out the software. (If you don’t have CVS installed, you can download it from the CSY Jazz Web server, HP is opening up development of these Java libraries, as well as those for TurboIMAGE and VPlus, to the e3000 community. Yawn’s notes on the MPE libraries state that “The purpose of this library is to make it possible to call MPE intrinsics from Java without the need of writing stub code using the Java Native Interface (JNI). Since the JNI only supports C and C++ development, the need to use JNI provided a real barrier to programmers in COBOL or other languages who wanted to interoperate with Java.” The lack of C and C++ use in the 3000 community makes these libraries a must in getting Java to do useful work on the e3000.

HP is also looking for suggestions on what else it might release into its shared source program. Candidates suggested by the CSY labs include ping.net.sys, snmp.net.sys, spiff.pub.sys, spxfer.pub.sys, FCOPY, NMMGR, BULDACCT and yes, even the Command Interface. Get your vote in for what part of the 3000 operating system you want to tinker with. Send e-mail to Interex’s Jim Keller, who’s in charge of the Shared Source code, at keller@interex.org.
