WRQ extends delivery
date of HP EnterView,
launches @Guard

Working to optimize performance of its new Java-based emulator, WRQ announced it will provide HP connectivity in the product’s second release, now scheduled for beta testing in November.

Reflection EnterView product manager Steve Dulaney said that the product will begin shipping in its first version at the end of August with emulation for IBM and Unix systems. But tests of beta software this spring indicated that more development time was needed to match performance levels of the Reflection series.
“We wanted this product to get out there so people could start looking at it for fourth quarter decisions,” Dulaney said. “We just couldn’t do that with the HP part of the code.” NS/VT connectivity wasn’t as fast as telnet links in the first version of the product, he said. WRQ is working on switching between page and screen mode as well.

“From the start of EnterView development, WRQ has been committed to delivering a Java solution for HP 3000 and HP 9000 platforms,” Dulaney said. “Our development plan, as of mid-1997, included HP 700/94 emulation, as well as VT220, 3270, and 5250 emulation; client-side Java-based APIs; and server-side administration console tools.”

WRQ has implemented a two-phase development plan for the product. On August 31 it will ship Reflection EnterView with 3270 and VT220 emulation. In Q4 1998, they will release a second beta version that includes HP 700/94 and 5250 emulation, as well as other key features. “WRQ puts a high priority on quality, and our decision to delay shipment of HP emulation is consistent with our reputation,” Dulaney said.

Separately, WRQ announced a new product to speed online access through browsers, @Guard. The product for Windows 32-bit PCs monitors network traffic and blocks “referrer” fields from all http requests that a browser makes. Internet experts say the fields can be considered a major security and privacy problem. The software also does ad blocking from Web pages, removing ads from HTML files being downloaded on the fly.

@Guard can also act as a personal firewall to filter network traffic to and from a PC, de-animate GIF files, and block Javascript based secondary windows. The product can also allow or block cookies on a site-by-site basis.

WRQ is launching the product as part of its Network Access Management strategy. A free demo version of the software is available at www.atguard.com.
