Summer is here, and so is new technology for 3000s

With the arrival of late summer we see the HP World conference setting up its tents in San Diego, where there will be new technical options introduced at the show in early August. Any time that new tech arrives on the 3000 it’s a notable event, because the limited customer base of the system and slow adoption rate of its customers – well, most of them, anyway – can stand in the way of new tech.

You can help in that process by getting out there and using what’s new where it can help in your operations. Happily, there’s a good deal of new technology getting around those hurdles. HP isn’t saying much about new disk technology that doesn’t include EMC these days, but its New Opportunities Solution Team leader Larry Boyd confirmed a few months ago that the SSA disk solutions are being investigated inside CSY. Nobody was sure as we went to press about what CSY will have to say about SSA disks, a solution that can give 3000 customers performance of at least 100 IOs per second for the price of a much slower EMC RAID solution. If nothing else, it’s a question that can get posed in a management roundtable session from the floor. (Customers are learning that’s the only way to be sure a question gets asked in the HP World roundtable: step up to the microphone and fire away.) It might be better posed during a SIGSYSMAN meeting at the show, or even in the MPE technical roundtable. But who knows – maybe it will come up in Dave Snow’s “Future technologies for the 3000” talk. That’s where Merced and IA-64 first appeared from CSY lips, and here we are less than a year later with a commitment to use that new tech.
