Express 5 is the main event for 3000 sites in August

Programming on MPE/iX 6.0 isn’t expected to be out of testing before October, so you’ll hear HP talking about what’s new and better in the Express 5 release of 5.5 instead. We were just days away from hearing about the new release when we had to put this FlashPaper into the envelopes – after all, we had that IA-64 news to break in the main issue. But what we did hear by press time about Express 5 indicates it will have some nice consolidation of fixes and a few new features for 3000 sites. Network stability is supposed to improve with some of the patches we’ve seen released recently, and Telnet/iX is among the main beneficiaries. It’s also about time for IMAGE Dynamic Master Dataset Expansion (MDX) to make an appearance in the customer base, something the round-the-clock shops need for big databases that can’t be taken offline for expansion.

This time HP plans to send everybody a Communicator for 5.5 Express 5 and an order form for the tapes, almost a kind of push release. It will be a Year 2000-compatible release, after all. Sooner or later HP has to tell us about Bravehawk, which will be known as a Series 989 when it rolls out with PA-8200 chips. What better place to tell us than a conference of its customers? Expect that Express 5 will provide the needed software to power that hawk, a product that VARs report their HP 3000 customers are already asking for.
