UK ingenuity is helping the 3000

There’s something of a revolution going on in England for the 3000, although it’s not yet happening in the customer base. The waves are being made by UK product developers, who have turned out at least a trio of tools that are already lapping onto North American shops’ shores. In addition to the GUI3000 release mentioned this month, customers can use CSL Solutions Linkway for ODBC access, a product developed around a consultancy for HP 3000 sites. And now we hear about a new version of the Whisper Programmer’s Studio, that GUI-based programming editor and development tool first shipped last fall from WhisperTech. It’s pretty remarkable that all this innovation should come from the UK, a part of the 3000 world that was pretty disconsolate just a few years ago after HP oversold Unix to its customer base there. CSY has taken steps to raise the 3000’s profile in the country by appointing a new business development manager for the UK. It’s got to be easier to sell the concept of a 3000 renaissance with new technology from native companies appearing at a healthy pace.
