HP rolled out MPE/iX 6.0 on time

The first mainline release of an HP 3000 operating system in more than two years left the HP distribution facilities on schedule in late October. HP 3000 division (CSY) release manager Jon Cohen reported that shipments began October 27th, and that "6.0 is a ‘Push’ release, meaning that we are sending it to all customers with support contracts. That number is fairly high, so I expect that it’ll be a couple of weeks before we complete all the shipments. We expect that distribution will be complete around mid-December.” The release includes the vastly superior HP Instant Information CD ROM, given a capsule review by NewsWire columnist John Burke. It also offers the 3000’s first anonymous Posix FTP, but you'll have to watch the length of the passwords you use in it for now -- it's limited to 28 characters in its first release.
