Sun’s Java delay
impacts 3000 features

The Java product team at Sun Microsystems is delaying the arrival of the Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.2 by at least two months, until November. HP 3000 Java expert Mike Yawn said the Sun delay will push back the availability of new Java/iX features which are to be based on the 1.2 technology. Swing classes, a powerful interface development tool for Java that Yawn demonstrated in March, are among the Java components that rely on 1.2. The 1.2 release also includes improved security with “a much more powerful model based on policies and permissions,” Yawn said, “and [it] will apply to applets, servlets, and applications equally.”

“We'll be shipping JDK 1.1.5 with MPE/iX 6.0,” Yawn added. “Beyond that, we haven't made a firm schedule for which JDK releases will ship with which MPE releases. Sun's slips mean that JDK 1.2 and HotSpot technology will be slower getting to MPE users, but we have not decided what release vehicles to use for these products.”
