HP adds compiler muscle at 3000 division

Some customers are wondering if the increased activity in compiler development for 64-bit HP 3000s means the current 32-bit PA-RISC versions of compilers like Cobol will languish in the shadows. 3000 division R&D manager Winston Prather said that the plans to continue improving Cobol II for current systems haven’t been finalized yet. But he did mention that one of the things he’s been working on over the last few months is hiring, “and throwing money at compiler projects.” SIGCOBOL co-chair Jeanette Nutsford said at the HP User show in England that “it’s unthinkable that HP wouldn’t continue to enhance Cobol for PA-RISC” while working on the 64-bit Cobol compiler.
