Ported Sendmail offers transport options for MPE/iX 6.0

Sendmail, the mailing system transport that HP eventually bundled in with MPE/iX in later releases of the operating system, works with the 6.0 version of the 3000’s operating environment.

James Hofmeister, an HP support engineer, reported that the software runs on an HP 3000 with the vintage operating system release. (6.0 was first shipped out from HP’s labs in October, 1998. But the operating system is still in use on many HP 3000 systems that didn’t need large file support or support for multiple-processor HP 3000s.)

Hofmeister reports that “I have Sendmail running on my 6.0 boot disk. The slickest way I could find to do this was to start with the MPE/iX 7.0 patch SMLGDT8, which is a complete product install, and use AUTOPAT to install the 7.0 patch on a 6.0 machine.

“You will want to continue to patch the 7.0 Sendmail with 7.0 patches — GR patch SMLHD15A as an example. Do not try to install SMLGDT8 and SMLHD15A at the same time. Patch SMLGDT8 is a complete product install. Patch SMLHD15A just includes repaired modules.”

Hofmeister added that HP doesn’t support Sendmail on MPE/iX 6.0. But HP ended its support for all of that MPE/iX release in 2002.
