WRQ founder Walker will retire, while his firm agreed to be acquired

HP 3000 connectivity supplier WRQ announced that its founder Doug Walker is retiring Dec. 31, 2004, and the company he created in 1981 with Mike Richer, Marty Quinn, Craig McKibben, and George Hubman is being acquired by two venture capital firms. Walker, Richer & Quinn produced one of the first HP 3000 terminal emulation products. Private equity firms Francisco Partners and Thoma Cressey Equity Partners, Inc. will purchase WRQ by the end of December; terms of the deal were not disclosed. Walker, the “W” in WRQ, will hand his CEO reins over to Shaun Wolfe, who’s been serving as WRQ president since 2001 and joined the Seattle-based firm in 1993. Privately-held WRQ has been profitable and has 6 million users worldwide.
