HP rolled out beta test patches for bundled WebWise

HP’s Mark Bixby announced that MPE/iX 6.5, 7.0 and 7.5 beta patches are now available for HP WebWise MPE/iX Secure Web Server version A.04.00, based on Apache 1.3.29 and OpenSSL 0.9.7d. Patch numbers are WBWHD89A for 6.5, WBWHD81A for 7.0, and WBWHD82A for 7.5. The individual patches are available to all HP 3000 users. WebWise was once a product HP sold for $1,300 to $2,000, offering secure Web services.

WebWise A.04.00 standardizes the Fundamental Operating System Web server version across all currently-supported releases of MPE. “I recommend that anybody running older versions of Apache or WebWise should upgrade to WebWise A.04.00,” Bixby said, “for maximum reliability.”

This new FOS WebWise A.04.00 replaces both Apache and WebWise A.01.00 on 6.5. For 7.0 and 7.5, it replaces FOS WebWise A.03.00.

Bixby said the difference between WebWise A.03.00 and A.04.00 is primarily bug fixes (including a number of security issues that were only annoyances for MPE). “But in accordance with the Number 5 technical vote-getter in the 2004 SIB, all of the source code, tools, and documentation used to build the product have also been included (with the exception of gcc). If you don't have any interest in the added material, you can simply purge it with a single :PURGEDIR command.”

Customers can also contact the HP Response Center to obtaining these beta patches. “The more customers who volunteer,” Bixby added, “the sooner this will all go into General Release.”
